Ten Kites Categories

Last updated: 20th January 2025

Create Categories in Ten Kites to organise menu items and menus on the system.

Categories can be set up in Settings > Customisation > Categories. Click ‘+ Add New Category’ in the top left corner to create new categories. Give the category a name and assign a parent category to house it under if desired:

Customise categories further by assigning colours or icons:

Assign categories to menu items and menus by editing the item and going to the ‘Categories’ tab. Categories can be searched for and assigned:

Use categories for internal tagging also. For example, you may wish to attach categories to items for kitchen staff detailing the recipe complexity. You can create a category for complexity and sub categories to branch off from this e.g. high complexity, medium and low. These can be further customised by adding icons and colours to each category for easier viewing:

This can also be used to drive guest interest in menus by highlighting promotional menus items. For example, showcase a menu item for certain use: chef favourite, this week’s special, new dish etc. These promotional categories can be grouped together under a new parent category for ‘Promotions’:

The categories can then be assigned to menu items by clicking ‘Edit’ on the desired item and opening the ‘Categories’ tab to attach:

These categories can then be included on exports and recipe cards.

Category Profiles

In order to include these categories on exports and menus you must create ‘Category Profiles’. Navigate to Settings > Customisation > Lists to create and manage individual Category Profiles.

Click ‘+ Add New List Item’ then ‘Add Category Profile’. These allow you to separate the categories even further and distinguish which categories you would like to include on menus and exports. For example, you may want to show the Parent Category ‘Promotions’ on menus, but show ‘Complexity’ (internal) categories on cookbooks. For this you can create separate profiles to enable on different units and outputs.

  1. Create the new category profile by giving it a name:

  1. Click ‘Save Category Profile’
  2. Go back to individual categories via Settings > Customisation > Categories
  3. Edit the category that you would like to assign this new category profile to
  4. Add the new category profile to the category:

  1. Save the category to complete
  2. Web outputs are then controlled from a unit level. Open the Unit View for the relevant brand and edit the details
  3. Scroll to the desired output and change the Category Profile to the profile you would like to display:
