David Dunne

Introduction

Customer background

David Dunne is an Irishman living in London who originally moved to study performance nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University, but has since stayed on to work in a range of professional sports in the UK, Ireland and the USA for the past seven years.

He works with a variety of athletes, spending most of his time with strength and power based intermittent team sports such as rugby as well as other sports with a stronger power to weight ratio focus, such as cycling and slalom canoe. He also works with many European Tour Golfers, boxers, track athletes and basketball players.

The challenge

Finding consistent, accurate nutrition tracking

Very early on in his career, David noticed the important role of nutrition not only to support athletes’ health and well-being but also to maximise their ability to perform. This led to the search for powerful and reliable nutrition software with the ability to analyse overall nutritional intake and also to break down recipes on a micro- and macronutrient scale.

He initially toyed around with Myfitnesspal and other software, but found “there was too much inconsistency,” especially since accuracy and attention to detail were key factors when evaluating his options. In the end, a quick Google search and call with the Nutritics team marked the start of a successful partnership.

Approach

Our solution

“It is vital, especially in sports where weight really makes a difference, that we know what athletes are putting into their bodies. Nutritics has helped me create recipes and meal plans that are tailored to an individual’s calorie and macronutrient needs.”

The Custom Dietary Reference Value Calculator enables him to change macronutrients for athletes with specific protein and carbohydrate requirements. He can set nutrient targets as precise intakes, as calculations based on body weight (or other formula based targets) or as an acceptable distribution range.

“We use Nutritics effectively to help our combat athletes make weight safely whilst still fuelling and recovering from key sessions by focusing on periodising their intake according to training load.”

The recipe feature enables him to analyse the full nutrient profile of his recipes including both macro- and micronutrients and to create healthier versions of his athletes’ favourite recipes. Using drag and drop, he then adds his recipes to meal plans — Nutritics providing him with a one-stop-shop solution and a big time saver.

Since the key objective for his business is to generate 1,000+ recipes over the next twelve months, David appreciates the reliability of the software and support of the Nutritics team even more. “It’s nice knowing the software is there for what I need it for.”

As part of his PhD, he is building a large recipe bank and using Nutritics to develop the nutritional information of these recipes. The focus of his PhD is a data science approach to behaviour change using digital platforms.
