Important update: Mandatory calorie display on menus has just been delayed for two years by the Dubai Municipality in order to help food businesses to prepare themselves.
Dubai Municipality launched the initiative complementing the National Nutrition Agenda 2017-2021 to encourage individuals to make more informed food choices suitable for their health status. The new initiative is supposed to lead to an increase in food outlets offering meals with a higher nutrient value.
The initiative ensures that:
- The calorie content is displayed on the menu at the point of sale.
- The caloric value is displayed against each item on the menu.
The mandatory implementation phase for restaurants, cafés and similar outlets to adjust their calorie menu labelling and include relevant information on menus starts on January 1, 2020. For food businesses with more than five branches, an earlier deadline of November 1, 2019 was set.
