Nutritics GB23 Food Database Upgrade: Enhancing Nutritional Insights
GB23 is poised to become the standard ‘generic foods’ database for customers in the UK and Ireland, starting from 27th September 2023. This comprehensive upgrade from the industry-leading GB15 combines the best of various datasets to provide you with a more robust and enriched resource for your nutritional information and food labelling needs.
Below you will find out the background and benefits, plus what to expect from automatic upgrades, manual opt-ins and opting-out. (2 min read)
Introducing GB23: A Fusion of Comprehensive Data
The GB23 database comprises 2887 foods meticulously compiled from various sources, including the McCance and Widdowson’s Composition of Foods Integrated Dataset (CoFID) 2021, the 2021 Quadram labelling dataset, and a thorough enrichment process aimed at filling crucial nutritional gaps.
The improvements pertain to gaps in vital nutrients like Vitamin D, Folates, Omegas, and Amino Acids – where original values were previously unknown but believed to be significant. GB23 is aligned with the latest and most up-to-date knowledge base from Public Health England.
Damian O’Kelly, Nutritics Founder and Chief of Product “More complete food data means better decision making. With the launch of GB23, Nutritics sets a new industry standard in nutritional analysis technology. Designed for the hospitality industry, nutrition professionals and researchers, GB23 provides a comprehensive suite of tools that empower you to make data-driven decisions rooted in cutting-edge nutritional science.”
Why Should You Use GB23?
GB23 is the result of an extensive optimisation project that makes it the most comprehensive data set currently available in the UK & Ireland.
CoFID, a foundation of nutritional insights, has long been recognised as a reliable reference database. This update enhances this database further by gap-filling missing nutrients and making it more suitable for nutritional labelling, thus ensuring that your outputs from Nutritics are as accurate and comprehensive as possible.
Using the GB23 Update:
If you’re a Nutritics user in the UK or Ireland, you don’t need to do anything. GB23 will automatically become the new standard on your account from 27th September 2023. However, if you’ve customised your data sources previously or live outside the UK & Ireland, you will need to manually opt-in to the new database if you wish to use it (Navigate to Settings>Data Sources>Custom Sources)
Updating Existing Content and Its Impact:
During this transition, you’ll receive a pop-up notification in Nutritics, allowing you to upgrade your existing GB15 foods to the new GB23 foods.
We highly recommend opting in to migrate previous creations to the new GB23 data source. This will ensure you are using the most current nutrient data consistently across your Nutritics account. Be aware that this update may lead to minor changes in the nutrient information of your creations, including recipes, labels, reports, exports, meal plans, diet logs, and menus.
*Note that the changes are exclusively related to nutrient data and not allergen indicators.
Considering Label Stock and Divergence:
If you have printed materials, they remain valid. However, it’s important to consider label stock control if you have dual information formats, such as printed labels and live digital menu displays. Avoiding inconsistencies between these formats will prevent confusion.
Opting Out of GB23:
If you prefer not to use the new GB23 data source, you have the option to customise your database selection in Nutritics to opt-out. You can easily do this within the app’s settings (Settings>Data Sources>Change drop-down to ‘Custom Sources’).
You can opt back in at any time by reversing these steps.
Continued Validity of GB15:
The GB15 data source is still a valid reference for providing nutrient information. You can choose to continue using it if it better suits your needs. See the steps above to continue to use the GB15 data source
